In this technique project share, basically get out your acrylic paints, paintbrushes, stamps, flowers, Smooch Spritz, empty toilet paper rolls (yep, we're recycling :-)), bubble wrap, etc...Just look around your pad and find all the odds & ends you might normally throw away & maybe some new discoveries too.
First of all, I LOVEEEE mini books, ok, I'm addicted to mini books, mini albums, mini covers, ATCs...you get it, all mini things artsy fartsy make me a little weak in the knees.
So, I'm going to show you how to make this altered up corrugated board that you can use for a mini book cover, a card, an accent on a layout, canvas...all up to your imagination. My plan is to make this a mini book about my mom & step-dad's sweet wedding from 2-3 years ago. I want to put lots of beautiful details on the inside pages, so I'll fill you in when it's ready ;-)
In playing with the Zutter Corrugated Cardboard, I knew the 5"x7" size was just perfect for an idea in mind.
Just as the Zutter site says, you can "paint, ink, tear, Distrezz cardboard, chipboard, wood, leather" the Zutter Corrugated Board. It works PERFECT with the Zutter Distrezz-It-All machine! It's seriously a lean, mean machine :))
Let's get started...
Step 1: I had these leftover grungeboard angel wings that were begging to be altered. Grabbed up some crackle paint & brushed a generous coat on them. Set aside to air dry (like this method best instead of grabbing the heat tool to speed up the process).
Step 2: Next, pick up an assortment of paints in your stash. I prefer the Making Memories, Liquitex, Golden...nice quality paints with less water content than some cheaper acrylic paints. I had some bubble wrap left over from a package received, toilet paper rolls/paper towel rolls.
Step 3: Note: The Zutter Corrugated Board has a nice layer that you can easily peel away to expose the different rough layers. This layer peels away really nice & better than your normal corrugated cardboard boxes you might find in the dumpster (not that I expect you to go digging in a trash dumpster :))
I peeled away the layer, used a brush and white acrylic paint to brush randomly on the cover as you see above. Here is where I just started "gettin' into my groove" by playing with bubble wrap dipped in a different color of acrylic paint, toilet paper roll dipped in paint...just let your imagination fly away...
Step 4: I even had this scrap piece of lacy paper and used it for a unique pattern. To be honest, I wasn't sure if I would really like it as bold a pattern but thinking I could always use acrylic paint to blend it out/tone it down if I didn't like the results. So, I grabbed some Smooch Spritz and started experimenting.
Step 5: I worked in some lilac acrylic paint and even dipped the toilet paper rolls along the edges, just going random with it all.
Step 6: Also added some Pearl Ex for a antiqued sheen of sparkle. Brush down into the trenches of the corrugated board. Use a heat tool to dry it out between layering.
Step 7: Now we're getting wild! :)) Also, added a brush here & there of celery green acrylic paint. You can keep layering & playing until you get the desired look you want. I go by the motto "less is more" so I don't "overwork" it. I also used the sewing machine sew down a ripped piece of Crafty Chronicle to the edge of the cover and bits & pieces of random machine stitching. You want to do this step before you start adding all your bulkier embellishements.
Step 8: Now the fun REALLY begins where you grab up your bling-y letters, flowers, pearls, Artistic Papers, Clearsnap Glue Gloss, Fairy Dust, metal watch faces, etc. I choose colors of accents that worked with the paints I used as well, or you can go vice versa.
Step 9: Now you can see the butterfly is dry from the crackle paint. A nice finish has crackled (see how this pulls in the color from the celery green paint used above in Step 7?) & lovin' it!!! Further, I used some random brads in my stash to accent the center of the butterfly.
Step 10: Using Clearsnap Glue Gloss to brush along the petals & dashes of Fairy Dust glitter, I accented the flowers that were begging to sparkle a bit ;-) At the top edge, I cut out a flower from Artistic Papers, colored in with some Smooch Spritz & a small brush, dry, and mounted on a pop dot.
Step 11: More random embellishing (i.e. stamping, pearls, etc) and voila!
