Donna Salazar Designs // "With You" Altered Mini Book Cover

Hi everyone! Wendy here with a technique project share for you today.
In this technique project share, basically get out your acrylic paints, paintbrushes, stamps, flowers, Smooch Spritz, empty toilet paper rolls (yep, we're recycling :-)), bubble wrap, etc...Just look around your pad and find all the odds & ends you might normally throw away & maybe some new discoveries too.

 First of all, I LOVEEEE mini books, ok, I'm addicted to mini books, mini albums, mini covers, ATCs...you get it, all mini things artsy fartsy make me a little weak in the knees.

So, I'm going to show you how to make this altered up corrugated board that you can use for a mini book cover, a card, an accent on a layout, canvas...all up to your imagination.  My plan is to make this a mini book about my mom & step-dad's sweet wedding from 2-3 years ago.  I want to put lots of beautiful details on the inside pages, so I'll fill you in when it's ready ;-)

In playing with the Zutter Corrugated Cardboard, I knew the 5"x7" size was just perfect for an idea in mind.

Just as the Zutter site says, you can "paint, ink, tear, Distrezz cardboard, chipboard, wood, leather" the Zutter Corrugated Board. It works PERFECT with the Zutter Distrezz-It-All machine!  It's seriously a lean, mean machine :))

Let's get started...

Step 1:  I had these leftover grungeboard angel wings that were begging to be altered.  Grabbed up some crackle paint & brushed a generous coat on them.  Set aside to air dry (like this method best instead of grabbing the heat tool to speed up the process).

Step 2:  Next, pick up an assortment of paints in your stash.  I prefer the Making Memories, Liquitex, Golden...nice quality paints with less water content than some cheaper acrylic paints.  I had some bubble wrap left over from a package received, toilet paper rolls/paper towel rolls.

Step 3:  Note:  The Zutter Corrugated Board has a nice layer that you can easily peel away to expose the different rough layers.  This layer peels away really nice & better than your normal corrugated cardboard boxes you might find in the dumpster (not that I expect you to go digging in a trash dumpster :))

I peeled away the layer, used a brush and white acrylic paint to brush randomly on the cover as you see above.  Here is where I just started "gettin' into my groove" by playing with bubble wrap dipped in a different color of acrylic paint, toilet paper roll dipped in paint...just let your imagination fly away...

Step 4:  I even had this scrap piece of lacy paper and used it for a unique pattern.  To be honest, I wasn't sure if I would really like it as bold a pattern but thinking I could always use acrylic paint to blend it out/tone it down if I didn't like the results.  So, I grabbed some Smooch Spritz and started experimenting.

Step 5:  I worked in some lilac acrylic paint and even dipped the toilet paper rolls along the edges, just going random with it all.

Step 6:  Also added some Pearl Ex for a antiqued sheen of sparkle.  Brush down into the trenches of the corrugated board.  Use a heat tool to dry it out between layering.

Step 7:  Now we're getting wild! :))  Also, added a brush here & there of celery green acrylic paint.  You can keep layering & playing until you get the desired look you want.  I go by the motto "less is more" so I don't "overwork" it.  I also used the sewing machine sew down a ripped piece of Crafty Chronicle to the edge of the cover and bits & pieces of random machine stitching.  You want to do this step before you start adding all your bulkier embellishements.

Step 8: Now the fun REALLY begins where you grab up your bling-y letters, flowers, pearls, Artistic PapersClearsnap Glue GlossFairy Dust, metal watch faces, etc.   I choose colors of accents that worked with the paints I used as well, or you can go vice versa.

Step 9:  Now you can see the butterfly is dry from the crackle paint.  A nice finish has crackled (see how this pulls in the color from the celery green paint used above in Step 7?) & lovin' it!!!  Further, I used some random brads in my stash to accent the center of the butterfly.

Step 10:  Using Clearsnap Glue Gloss to brush along the petals & dashes of Fairy Dust glitter, I accented the flowers that were begging to sparkle a bit ;-)  At the top edge, I cut out a flower from Artistic Papers, colored in with some Smooch Spritz & a small brush, dry, and mounted on a pop dot.

Step 11:  More random embellishing (i.e. stamping, pearls, etc) and voila!

Video // The Love for Mom..."Food" for the Soul

A couple of weeks ago my sweet sister, April Morris, sent me happy mail, a CD of this A.MA.ZING video (see below) that she put together in tribute to our
oh.so.beautiful, classy, super talented, multi-crafy, super gardener, knock-your-socks-off at cooking, and old skool canning of veggies & fruits & diva-li-cious mother, Josie Bell Morris.
She had told me she was working on a secret project for mom
but
I had NO idea she was putting together all these "old skool" pictures
{insert, you have been warned, good Lord, at first I wanted to slap my sister but then laughed at some of them...my how things have changed since my school days...lol}

Anyhoo, when I popped the CD into my Mac, I was seriously laughing, in tears, in awe of my mom's beauty while all the while remembering how much LOVE, major support, and sweetness is so full in her heart every single day!
My mom is truly one of the most loveable people you will ever meet & no one ever feels like a stranger around her.  I like to say I have a lot of her personality because she is always so warm, funny, and friendly.  She has her down days but always seems to crack a joke or make you laugh before the convo is over.  We talk every day/every other day even though I'm 5 hours away now but she is truly a strength to be reckoned with.

This video TRULY captures so much of my mom and OUR mom was literally in awe of seeing all the pictures!
It amazes me how sometimes when I'm talking to my mom about elementary school, junior high, high school, university days, all my piano recitals, experiences...she remembers details of names + memories that sometimes slip my mind...INCREDIBLE!
and she DEFINITELY does not look her age of 72!
{I hope to age so well in my coming years}

As a family, we recently had a scare a few weeks ago with my mom's health, she had respiratory edema and almost lost her life in a few hours after an ambulance run to the hospital {given I'm a 5 hour drive away, I was slightly panicked}, a weekend in ICU, and a week in private hospital room...but by the grace of God she is here, alive, and ready to live more memories.
This video means even more to me now than before when I received it.
I've lost one parent in death and fighting all might to keep my mom here & healthy.
She is doing MUCH better now & back to her lively, independent & active self, although slowing down a bit has been slightly requested.
She is TRULY a shining example of faith, independence, survival, and amazing love.

She is ALWAYS a bright light to my life and to my older sister as well!

HUGE THANKS & major talent to my sister,
April Morris,
{i insert who is not a scrapbooker but thinks the scrapbooking craze is pretty cool}
but blew me away with putting together this fab video as her first video everrr!!!

enjoy....

I purchased this neat unfinished wood mini cabinet on my trip to Italy back in May.
Gianluca was giving me a face of "what in the world will you do with this?"

I cleverly said "oh, I will think of something....trust me" :)
TA-DAAAAA!!!

If you look closely, I used the 4x6 transparencies in the collection as the "windows" on the cabinet.

Happy Happy Postcard Love.

Such a sweet surprise for Gianluca to send me a handwritten postcard in the mail today.
Priceless.
{especially in the modern world of all things high tech}

He was on holiday [insert note here for American friends, "vacation"
for a couple of weeks with his parents.
I was sooooo wishing I could have been there....
and I think he felt my pain everyday when we talked, he sent me pics and sweet msgs that were waiting in my inbox every morning when I was waking up...
well, this sweet postcard made me feel like I was there
AND
the fact that we Skyped by iPhone while he was sitting on the beach.
Gotta' love technology.
BUT
even in an Internet driven world...
the handwritten simple note of love is the sweetest gesture everrrrr!

Grazieeee mio tesoro Luca! :)
